Congressional Help for Alzheimer’s on the way?
Article by Richard Kuehn
Today Congress took a giant step forward in providing critical support for the growing number of American’s who have or will develop Alzheimer’s Disease, with the Senate Committee responsible for the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) taking action on the bill (S. 3036). NAPA provides a coordinated strategic plan to confront the crisis which is looming: the baby boomer generation will begin to turn 65 in January, and one in eight of them (about 10 mil.) are expected to develop Alzheimer’s Disease. Here in Monterey County, it is estimated that 7,000 people suffer from the disease, including my grandmother. That’s why I have been actively involved in raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association, which is the largest private funder of Alzheimer’s research in the nation. Please call your Senators to urge them to pass NAPA during this lame duck session. The bill does not call for any more Federal spending but rather provides a strategy for fighting this terrible disease which affects millions of senior citizens.

By 2050 nearly 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer?s, yet there is no national plan to deal with this looming crisis. The National Alzheimer?s Project Act (NAPA) would establish an inter-agency advisory council to address the government?s efforts on Alzheimer?s research, care, institutional services, and home- and community-based programs.
Find out if your member of Congress is a co-sponsor of NAPA at http://www.alz.kintera.org/NAPACosponsors. If not, ask your member of Congress to act now and support NAPA (S. 3036 / H.R. 4689).

About the Author
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member Richard Kuehn was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. He became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to the elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
