Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common types of dementia prevalent among the elderly. It is a brain disorder which disables a person greatly due to the incapacitating effects it has on memory, thought process and functioning. The condition affects the persons’ rational thinking, daily activities and even the motor functioning. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.4 million Americans will be affected with Alzheimer’s by this year. Statistics indicate that more women are prone to be affected than men with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. By having a proper understanding of the illness, the symptoms can be properly linked to the cause and appropriate treatment can be sought at the onset stage itself. With Canada Rx drugs such as Dimebon for AD being available at discounted prices from Big Mountain Drugs.com, there is no reason why patients with even a retirement pension cannot find the relief from Alzheimer’s Disease

What is Alzheimer’s?

Dementia is a brain disorder which severely impairs a person’s memory, thought processes and function. Alzheimer’s is a disease which ranks high in the dementia list. It is believed that Alzheimer’s is a cause of a genetic mutation. This is the increase in beta-amyloid protein, which causes the death of nerve cells in the brain. There is no exact reason as to why this disease affects only the elderly. The propensity for the elderly people to suffer from AD is linked with the natural degeneration process of brain cells. However, this does not mean that all elderly people are affected with Alzheimer’s. Those with predisposition towards the condition will experience the disease as the natural aging process weakens the brain functioning.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

The most common symptom of Alzheimer’s is memory lapse. Most often memory lapse is dismissed as normal behaviour of the elderly. However, the severity of memory loss associated with AD is much greater than age related memory loss. People with AD will keep forgetting their names, where they live, the incidents and activities they just encountered minutes ago, and even the names of family members. Personality changes and the inability to interact socially are other symptoms of Alzheimer’s. The memory lapse continues as the disease progresses and the degeneration of the brain accelerates. After a while, a person with Alzheimer’s disease will be unable to function in the normal world. Confusion, disorientation and total inability to care for themselves is common when the disease is at its zenith. If neglected, aggravated health conditions resulting from pneumonia or another form of debilitating state of health is the conclusion to this disease as persons become home bound due to the illness.

Diagnosing Alzheimer’s and Treatment Options

There is no test which can diagnose Alzheimer’s, and, unfortunately, there is no cure. However, the FDA has authorised a number of drugs which may slow the progress of Alzheimer’s. As there are many types of dementia, it is always better to diagnose the illness in order to single out Alzheimer’s disease. Most researchers believe that the ability to slow the progress of the disease remains on early detection. They believe that if the course of medication is taken early, it will greatly slow the progression of the disease. Whatever the reason, early diagnosis will always benefit the person affected since most illnesses reach irrecoverable state once past a certain phase of progression.

Dimebon and Alzheimer’s

A new Canada Rx treatment alternative for Alzheimer’s is now available at Big Mountain Drugs, a reputed online Canada pharmacy. Dimebon, or Dimebolin Hydrochloride, as its generic name states, is an antihistamine drug which protects brain cells from continued degeneration and damage. Dimebon is also used to treat Huntington’s disease. As Alzheimer’s is a disease caused by brain cell death, this drug’s efficacy in slowing down the brain cell damage has proved to be effective in treating AD patients.

As Dimebon is a relatively new drug to aid in Alzheimer’s, it should be mentioned that adverse reactions to the drug that are not established yet may be experienced by some people. Common adverse reactions include depression, diarreah, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, nausea, vomiting etc. If experiencing any severe side effects such as chest pain, blurred vision, allergic reactions, hives, severe vomiting and swelling, consulting medical attention is highly recommended.

Alzheimer’s is a slow- progressing disease, which is often, misdiagnosed in its initial stages. However, with knowledge of the symptoms and its causes, individuals stand a better chance of obtaining the correct diagnosis in order to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Dimebon and other Alzheimer’s medication can be ordered from bigmoutaindrugs.com or any other Canadian pharmacy at affordable prices, putting AD treatment within the reach of even the low income retired patients.

Amazing Free 15 Minute Online Test For Dementia

Amazing Free 15 Minute Online Test For Dementia

Article by Paul Cresswell

An early warning test for Alzheimer’s that takes only 15 minutes to complete has been designed by British Scientists, which can spot signs of the debilitating brain disease in people as young as 50.

This on line, interactive computer based interactive quiz provides users with an instant result and could help prevent or delay the condition by advising simple diet and lifestyle changes. Experts worldwide acknowledge that the delay of the onset of Alzheimer’s by just five years could halve the number dying from the condition which equates to a third of the over 65′s in Britain alone.

At the same time, scientists worldwide are trying to create blood and other tests that can identify the disease early, but most are still in the early stages of development. This online test, called the Cognitive Function Test is the only test in existence that is free and can be taken on line.

The test follows an Oxford University study into Alzheimer’s which credits a simple vitamin pill with cutting brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer’s by an incredible 500 per cent.

The Vitamin B tablet, made up of three vitamin B supplements, was described as the ‘first glimmer of hope’ in the race to find a drug that slows, stops or controls the development of the life threatening disease, and was found to be more effective when taken early. It was directly as a result of the Vitamin B discovery that the online test has been devised.

Simply put, if you score low in the test on line, you need to see your doctor for a blood test to measure the level of Homocysteine, a compound naturally made by the body, but high levels have been linked to memory loss and Alzheimer’s.

Dementia and Vitamin B researcher Professor David Smith said: ‘Alzheimer’s is a preventable disease, not an inevitable part of the aging process. The trick is to identify any decline in memory function as early as possible, and to take the necessary prevention steps.’

The free, comprehensive Cognitive Function Test is found at www.foodforthebrain.org and has three sections using computer based tasks and games to test different components of memory function.

The Vitamin B compound, comprising 20mg of vitamin B6, 0.8mg of vitamin B9, or folate, and 0.5mg from Vitamin B12, is known to break down levels of homocysteine, and extremely high doses cuts the shrinkage of the brain that occurs naturally as we age.

However, the vitamin compound should not be taken without medical advice as high doses may fuel tumours and interfere with the treatment of other illnesses.

Dr. Celeste de Jager, the senior developer of the Cognitive Function Test confirmed that, as only a small proportion of Alzheimer’s cases are caused by genes, most cases should be preventable. She also added that there is little point in people under 50 doing the test.

British charity Alzheimer’s Research UK have cautiously welcomed the test, stressing that the online test is not a diagnosis tool, and reiterating that, if concerned about an apparent decline in memory function, the patient should see their medical practitioner.

The test, designed to detect mild cognitive impairment, works by testing several aspects of memory function, the first of which is the episodic memory, which is the memory function used to recall a shopping list. Next, the Executive Function is tested, which is the memory used to use past experiences to plan for the future. The third section measures a patient’s ability to visualise where everyday objects are placed.

The next section of the test rates the brain’s ability to take in a lot of information and the speed at which it processes it.

The test’s final score takes into consideration other factors such as age, education and whether memory lapses have been noticed in everyday, normal life.

The test is concise, fun to do, and totally free. A reminder, again though, that a medical practitioner should always be consulted in the event of a low score confirming suspicions of brain shrinkage or memory loss.
