American charities offer funding for biomarker research

American charities offer funding for biomarker research

Article by Jamie Francis

A pair of American charities have announced they are prepared to offer 0,000 to help enable research into Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)-specific biomarkers.

The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) have called on scientists from the academic world as well as those involved in the biotech industry to apply for the research grants. According to a statement released by the groups, both are particularly interested in defining and validating clinical outcomes for FTD subpopulations for use in clinical trials; FTD-relevant imaging agents; CSF- and plasma-based assays; and TDP-43 and tau-focused biomarkers specifically relevant to FTD populations.

The AFTD?s mission is to find the cause and the cure for Frontotemporal Dementia, as well as to inform, educate and support those suffering from the condition and their families. The ADDF is focused on speeding up the discovery and development of drugs to help treat, cure and also prevent Alzheimer?s disease related dementias and cognitive aging.

Frontotemporal Dementia is brought on by the degeneration of the frontal lobe of the brain and may also involve degeneration of the temporal lobe. These areas of the brain are responsible for people?s behaviour, language skills and emotional responses to situations. Although it is less widespread than Alzheimer?s disease, Frontotemporal Dementia is a significant cause of dementia in younger people (particularly those under the age of 65).

This form of dementia can lead to behavioural changes. Sufferers may find it hard to empathise with others, display inappropriate behaviour, become aggressive and easily distracted. With regard to language, they may struggle to find words and find it difficult to hold conversations.

The charities have said that alongside the 0,000 of initial funding, follow-on funding is also a possibility. Any groups wishing to send a letter of intent must do so by August 25. Applications need to be submitted by September 8. Once received, the applications will be reviewed by an independent scientific review committee which will comprise experts in biotechnology investment, along with representatives from the neurodegenerative disease drug discovery and development research sector.

It?s hoped that research into the development of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)-specific biomarkers will allow scientists to diagnose the disease at an earlier stage and lead to a breakthrough with regard to treatment of the condition. Currently there is no cure and the progression of the disease cannot be slowed, although there are ways to ease symptoms through increased understanding of the condition and coping strategies for sufferers and their families.
