Neurology: Testing for Alzheimer’s

For adult children, it can be one of the most emotional challenges they face: how to help a parent who may be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. “Often times, the problem with Alzheimer’s/dementia is the person lacks the insight to understand that things are a problem.” In this segment of Health Matters, Dr. Kelly O’Neal, psychologist, discusses how Lee Memory Care is diagnosing and treating the aging parent while providing guidance for adult children. Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, FL now offers the latest in surgical technology through the use of the da Vinci Surgical System. Some Tips to Prevent Alzheimer

Some Tips to Prevent Alzheimer

Article by Rodion

The ailments that provoque the progressive degradation of our basic mental properties are a well known reality nowadays. Such degenerative diseases have been the target of several and compulsive investigations in health’s area, due to their unmerciful mortality: anyone can be an Alzheimer’s victim, no matter who the person is or what he or she does for living. The result is a slow, painful and returnless death of the brain cells, causing a progressive loss of mental capacities, like memory, flexibility, logical reasoning, understanding and more. As the time goes on, the ailment provoques the complete loss of discernment and self-awareness, resulting in the person’s behavioural collapse: she can no longer recognise is own family or even itself, complete sentences or remember places, faces and recent occurrences. Finally, in a posterior phase of the illness, the victim needs aid from other people even to make the most easy daily tasks, e.g., dressing, taking bath, eating and so forth.

Diseases like Alzheimer’s remain incurable until today; either way, there aren’t clear causes to the origin of the Alzheimer’s disease, though there is the suspicion it has a strong genetic determination; scientists found out, for example, that almost everybody in a Colombian town called MedellĂn has (or will have) the Alzheimer’s disease. However, adopting the premise that the death of brain cell is in the basis of the symptoms, many specialists have argued that brain fitness is a possible method of prevention.

See then a few examples of beneficial activities to your brain.

- Grab your computer mouse with the other hand. This a simple task which will force your brain to deal with a new unusual information.

- Watch less television. The brain needs to be trained, and you won’t be able to do that with the television.

- Do as many things with your non-dominant hand as possible. It might be hard at the beginning, but it will be excellent to your brain.

- Table games are also hugely benefic, as they put your brain working out.

- Put your clothes on without opening your eyes.

- Use your own head to do sums when you’re at the market.

- Learn a new language.

- Never (but never!) ignore physical exercise. “Mens sana in corpore sano” is an old motto, but it still has a strong meaning.

- Having an healthy nutrition plays a important role. The internet is full of nice tips about this issue.

And don’t forget: until there is no cure, avoiding Alzheimer isn’t totally up to us; however, doing the best we can is our duty.

Green Tea Could Help To Improve Memory

Green Tea Could Help To Improve Memory

Article by Lisa Paule

That is what new evidence is showing, that ones memory can be improved from enjoying green tea.

Some tests were done in the University of Newcastle that have shown that both black and green teas discourage the activity of enzymes which are found in the brain that affect ones memory loss.

These findings have been reported in the Phytotherapy research journal, and it has been hinted that this could be a clue to treating Alzeimers Disease. This would indeed be a great thing for a lot of families across the world that are affected by this very disease on a daily basis.

Green tea and black tea are actually quite closely related, because they are both made from the same plant called Camellia Sinensis, and the reason they are so different all boils down to the fermentation process that they have to go through.

This is a great breakthrough in the research into what could treat Alzeimers and make its symptoms better, as green and black tea discourage the activities of Acetylcholinesterase known as AChE enzyme. They also inhibit the activities of another enzyme called BuChE which is mostly found in the deposits of the protein that are found in the brain of the people that suffer from Alzheimer?s.

Green tea took it up a notch further, it is also said to discourage the activity of beta-secretase, which also affect people with Alzheimer?s. The great thing is that the effects last for weeks whereas for black tea they only last for a day. It becomes clear which one is supreme between the two.

Even though there is no cure of this disease, it is clear that the progression of the disease can be slowed down. It is early days and more research needs to be done but research so far is leading to the great discovery, and further tests are going to be conducted and more trials conducted. These things do take time so we might have to wait a little bit more to know the outcome of those trials. It is definitely something to look forward to though. It really would be a great thing if green tea would be able to help prevent or better yet, be able to treat such a terrible disease. It would give a lot of suffers hope in getting better and have a chance at improving their lives.

If you are interested in knowing other benefits that come with green tea, you should take a look at Tava tea, because it has other great benefits in itself, including weight loss.
